Here you’ll find all the details about our upcoming competitions, our past winners, and external competitions we think are worth mentioning.

There’s lots here to keep you busy and we look forward to receiving your entry in the next HWS competition, but remember to check our competition rules!

Please note that the deadline for competition entries is now midnight on the 25th of each month.


Special Competition Announced 12 March 2019

Write a 300 word opening paragraph/scene suitable for a work of children’s middle-grade fiction developed from the creative writing Wordtamer activity in Judy Waite’s March workshop.  Deadline – midnight on 25th April.  Winner to be announced at our event on 11th June.

Prize to include feedback for continued first 1,000 words, plus 1:1 meeting of up to one hour to discuss the developed work.

Middle-grade: A story for young people aged between 7 and 12.  Any voice and style.

Use the sentence, the sign and your memory.  See if the magic happens …

Please enter in the usual way: a title for the story and your name in the body of the email with the story attached as a Word document.

Keats Competition – open to members and non-members, free entry for all

A wonderful opportunity to celebrate 200 years since the publication of Keats’s ‘Ode to Autumn’ by entering a special competition.  ‘In 300 words, write a poem,  short story or play scene inspired by the opening line: “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness …”‘  The winning entry will be performed at the Theatre Royal, Winchester, on 7th October by members of the Performing Arts Department.  Get thinking!!
