Often, the person writing the story is not the person telling it. Maybe it’s someone in the story who is narrating, bringing with them biases and attitudes that affect what the reader ‘hears’. We’ll look at who is best placed to tell our story. If it turns out that we are best placed, what does our personal voice ‘sound’ like on the page and how will it affect the story? We’ll consider point of view, filters and the reliability of different narrators. And we’ll talk a bit about the music of language – the euphonics – much simpler than it sounds!
Adrienne Dines is a writer and tutor with over 20 years experience running workshops on various aspects of the Craft of Storytelling at Writers’ Festivals – for many years at Winchester – Educational Conferences, in prisons, schools and hospice. She has mentored writers, who were struggling with voice, uncooperative characters or convoluted plot lines. She is currently collating her talks/workshops into a guide for writers/storytellers on the Craft of Storytelling – how stories work and why – and what to do when they don’t. She is a regular judge for writing competitions and an irreverent speaker on the Art of Storytelling.
